“The BHAW programme has been of incredible value to
our business in helping us formulate a framework of health
and wellbeing campaigns to support our staff in making
healthier lifestyle choices and in providing them with
health and wellbeing resources and information for
themselves, their families and the wider community. The
award programme has provided us with valuable
networking and mentoring opportunities, and resources for
introducing new health and wellbeing policies. Our
progression through the levels from bronze to continuing
excellence has encouraged us to think about subjects
such as equality, diversity, inclusion, social value and
sustainability as areas to consider in relation to our staff’s
health and wellbeing. At every level of the programme, we
are encouraged to take a holistic approach to our health
campaigns, linking physical and mental wellbeing where
possible. In addition, recognition from the BHAW awards
lets us showcase to prospective employees that we are
committed to supporting their health and wellbeing
throughout their employment journey with us, in turn aiding
recruitment and retention of staff.”

inclusive workforce by raising awareness, providing

Nexus to gain recognition as an exceptional
organisation in offering health and wellbeing support for
staff and be recognised as an ambassador for other
organisations in the North East.”
Purmo Group UK Limited, Gateshead
“Whilst ‘we care’ is part of our Company Motto and we
have always provided excellent support to our
employees, we acknowledged that awareness and
promotion of general health issues could be better.
Our experience has been very positive. The initiatives
have been well received by our employees, and our
Health Advocates have learned a great deal. The

motivation to deliver, and the support received from
Louise at Gateshead Council is invaluable.”

“Our employees are our biggest asset, and we wanted to
offer something that made a positive difference to their

to do that we invest in our people; the health and

investment. Participating in the Award has provided
access to support and resources that have shaped the
delivery of our health and wellbeing programme, and
established a structure in which health leads are
recognized and rewarded through the Health Advocate
role. The Award has enabled us to plan meaningful
delivery aligned with local and national campaigns, whilst
evaluating the impact on the workforce. The visibility of
the Award has established a level of expectancy in the
delivery of campaigns which has maintained momentum
and inspired innovation.”

“The structure and guidance the programme provides
aligns with our Culture Canvas. The programme
encourages organisations to look at prioritising the
physical and mental health of employees. By working
towards specific timescales, at incremental levels, our
employees’ health is at the centre of how we operate.
By demonstrating how much we value our employees,
we make sure people feel appreciated. Using the Better
Health at Work programme, structure and guidance, the
organisation has introduced a number of ways to
improve individuals’ physical and mental health; whilst
encouraging employees to take responsibility
themselves.”
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council
“The award shows the organisations commitment to the
wellbeing agenda and the value we place on supporting
employee health and wellbeing. It also ensures we are
consistently reviewing our offer and helps support
planning of services etc. It ensures we have a structure to
measure our health and wellbeing offer against and then
enables us to plan effectively for the 12 months ahead.
Working closely with the HI Specialist from our Public
Health also ensures good joined up working across the
organisation. It’s also great for ideas sharing!”

signposting our employees to best practice so they
could make informed choices for any support they
needed. It has provided an ideal platform for our health

a happier, healthier workforce creates stronger teams
and greater impact. We want our people to enjoy coming
to work and to understand how and where to access
information to look after themselves mentally, physically,
and socially. The Better Health at Work Award has
enabled us to train health advocates, share resources,
connect to other businesses and ensures annual
reflection on how we can improve. Over the years, as
we have moved to ambassador status, staff wellbeing
has been given more focus, campaigns and themes are
now embedded into much of what we do, and we are
grateful to the public health team for their ongoing
support on this journey."
Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust
“To ensure that our health and wellbeing work goes
above and beyond the requirements outlined by the
NHS health and wellbeing framework, helping to ensure
that we support our colleagues across a variety of areas
and that we can demonstrate excellence in doing so.
The award is beneficial to the organisation as it prompts
us to think outside the box, extend our health and
wellbeing support into new and important areas that we
might not necessarily touch upon usually; and it also
holds us to account for conducting high quality,
meaningful campaigns.”
Getinge Limited, South Tyneside
“Getinge has chosen to participate in the Better Health at
Work Award to improve employee Health and Wellbeing,
employee engagement and continue our wellbeing
journey. This scheme will run in parallel with our Getinge
People Plan, which aims to provide the right environment,
wellbeing and health for our employees. The criteria set
out for the award has enabled us to focus our efforts on
what really matters to our employees. Conducting the
initial survey gave us a good insight into which areas to
structure our health campaigns on based on the feedback
provided. This is a truly employee led initiative which has
increased employee engagement.”

These campaigns and initiatives help raise awareness
and promote healthier lifestyle choices among
University employees. BHAWA has provided a solid
foundation for our Health and Wellbeing Action Plan and

staff health & wellbeing scheme that incorporates the
best standard of workplace health and wellbeing across
many organisations in the North-East.As we have
progressed through the levels of the BHAWA scheme

annual staff health and wellbeing campaigns, as well as
learning from other organisations good health and
wellbeing working practices and keynote speakers on
topical wellbeing priorities and issues.”

“We chose to participate in the Award to gain structure,
guidance, and support for our wellbeing initiatives on site.
We also wanted external recognition to make our efforts
more visible to employees, strengthen our reputation, and
support talent retention and attraction through an
accredited and recognised wellbeing framework.
We value the wide range of resources and support
provided, which encouraged us to explore new aspects of
wellbeing. The regular check-ins and guidance were
extremely helpful, and connecting with other
organisations allowed us to share experiences, gain fresh
ideas, and learn from each other’s challenges and
successes.”
END. Sunderland
“We recognise the importance of prioritising employee
health and wellbeing, not just as a responsibility but as a
core part of our culture and values. Years ago we didn't
really have anything formal in place to support this so we
started working with the BHAWA to provide us with a
starting point and ongoing framework. The Award has
really helped us to move from ad-hoc initiatives to a more
strategic, proactive and sustainable approach to
supporting our people and wider communities. We
particularly like the sense of community and shared
learning with the Award coordinators and other workplaces
who make wellbeing a workplace priority.”
Karbon Homes, Newcastle
“Wellbeing is a strategic priority at Karbon Homes and
has been since we engaged with the award. We loved
the fact that the award has a local focus about wellbeing
in the North-East. The framework it provides is
exceptional. Although we had some support in place,
the award has helped us to continually review our
approach. The support and network are invaluable. You
don't feel like you're starting from scratch, there's
always someone with an idea of what they've tried. The
portal is great. It has a huge number of resources and
it's easy to use and access. It's helped us with
campaigns where we've less experience, and they're
now part of our annual calendar.”
